Westlakes

The Rowing Club make their annual trip to Adelaide on the 28th January to attend a Regatta at Westlakes. The course and facilities have been improved over the last few years, in part, to hold the 2011 Nationals Championships for Rowing Australia. The course is a little more challenging with a full 1000 and 2000 metre distance for events. While a few 2nd and 3rd placings were achieved, the highlight was our Junior Girls, in Katelyn O’Mahoney and Stella Edmanson, winning in a Double Scull. Well done girls. Composite crews were also put together with Wentworth and Adelaide Rowing Clubs to assist our Masters Women and Men compete.

New Oars

The club has recently purchased some new oars to assist crews on the water. Four pairs of light weight scull oars have been purchased which are mostly suitable for our Juniors and women rowers. This being a growing membership category for the club. The oars have slightly smaller hand grips which juniors and ladies should find more suitable to use.

The other set of new oars are 8 light weight sweep oars which supports crews training in the Eights. At the moment, the Masters Men and Senior Men are training in the Eights Regularly with the senior women looking to get an Eight together for Easter.

New Members

Our membership continues to grow and we would like to welcome the following Junior members, Christian (CJ) Van Aardt, Jacob (JJ) Van Aardt, Ally Dimasi, John Cubit and Social Member Tanya Wild.

New Appointment – Female Vice Captain

With the growth of our membership at the Rowing Club over recent years there are larger groups forming and making significant contributions to the club. One of these groups is our Senior Women Rowers. The Committee would like to announce the appointment of Jacinta Macri as the Female Vice Captain for the Club. Jacinta has been involved with Rowing for many years and has been very active in getting more ladies down to the club to row in crews. Jacinta will be looking to further co-ordinate the Senior Women Rowers at the club and be the contact for the group to help more people to become involved. For ladies looking to enquire on how they become more active in rowing, Jacinta’s contact number is 0409 327 559.

Shepparton Rowing Club.

The Shepparton Rowing Club was formed in 1884 and were active on the Goulburn River until they folded in 1970 due to unsuitable rowing/river conditions. The club has recently been discussing with Rowing Victoria to reform and utilise Victoria Park Lake as their new rowing facility. In early January 2012, David Schier, President SRC, met with our committee and we decided to provide 5 older training boats to SRC to help their club get back on the water. SRC are encouraged by the interest in Rowing from their township and well as support from Rowing Clubs around Victoria for their assistance. SRC are look forward in putting competitive crews together with a view to compete here at Easter in 2013.

One of the boats donated was the Don MacKay, Father to Carmel Mackay, Executive Officer at Mallee Sport Assembly. This boat, name to be retained, has received a new lease on life at a training boat for new rowers at SRC.

Australian Henley on the Yarra

The Senior Men’s Eight have received an invitation to compete in the 98th annual Australian Henley Regatta on the Yarra on the 25th February. This is an exciting event for the blokes who have been training regularly since their Head of the Yarra Event last November. It was possibly back in the 1980’s when the club was last able to field a crew in this Event

Easter 2012

Planning for our Annual Easter Regatta is currently underway with Members working out what events they should be training for and what we need to do to host the event.

Forming Crews – We are encouraging members to let representatives know if they are interested in Rowing at Easter.

· For Masters Men please speak with Dave Carson,
· Masters Women with Rob Ellis,
· Senior Men with Dave Talbott,
· Senior Women with Jacinta Macri,
· Junior Girls and Boys with Michael Wild and Rob Ellis.

Along with rowing, the club will be looking for support to help host  the Regatta on Easter Saturday 7th April. We would like to list a few  groups to see if they could take care of some areas;

Prepare Rowing course, Broadcast tower and Camping Area – Masters and Senior Men

Lunchtime meal for officials (also drinks and snacks), Evening Dinner – Senior Women

Kiosk – Parents of Junior boys and girls.

Summary of Upcoming Events;
· Australian Henley – Saturday 25th February
· Mini Regatta – Friday night 16th March 6-00pm.

Boat Naming – Terry Hill
The Committee is inviting Members, Friend and Patrons of the Mildura Rowing Club to a gathering to celebrate the naming of the new double scull, being the latest addition to the fleet, as the ‘Terry Hill’. The occasion to take place this Sunday 19th June provides an opportunity to acknowledge the contribution Terry and his family have made to the Mildura Rowing Club over the many years of their involvement.
The activity will get underway at 10am followed by a Row past with the encouragement to get a few boats on the water. A BBQ lunch will follow the morning events.

Indoor Rowing Training
Winter training during the week has been going exceptionally well with numbers between 8 and 20 turning up on a Tuesday and Thursday evening at 5-30pm. It’s a great way to keep a little rowing fitness going through these cooler months while enjoying the activity in a group environment.

Rowing Activity
There has been quite a lot of weekend rowing activity since Easter. The Men’s Eight has been going out every Saturday morning at 8am with support from different members filling in from week to week. On Sunday morning at 9am, many juniors are hitting the water with the support of a few senior members. Louise Williams is promoting a Ladies Eight on the water Sunday morning at 9am for members interested in participating. Please email Lou on lwilliams@madec.edu.au if you would like to get involved.

Rowing from Mildura to Wentworth – Saturday 12th February
New Social Committee Formed
Recent Working Bee

Passing of Keith Gilbert
Keith ‘Knuckles’ Gilbert was a Life member of the Mildura Rowing Club and has recently passed away. Keith had been ill for some time however was involved with the club for over 60 years. He was instrumental in the idea and construction of the Rowing Clubrooms that we enjoy today, built in 1963. In recent times when he called down to the rowing club he would chat about how the rowing club was going and tell the story of when the old rowing clubrooms was significantly damaged in the 1956 flood. Keith promoted to the committee at that time, a design to construct a new facility that he created on the back of a piece of plasterboard. The committee obtained formal design plans and proceeded to raise money for the new building through the enthusiasm created by Keith.

Recent Regattas
Stef Heaysman recently travelled to the Rutherglen Regatta with Wentworth and competed in Single Scull events on both days. Stef won both events and was able to generate 2 state premiership points for Mildura through her efforts. Ask Stef of her training activity to prepare for the events when you see her next. I don’t think Stef had time to unpack her packs following 3 weeks in Germany. Great effort Stef.

I travelled in the opposite direction on the weekend just gone to compete in a Regatta at West Lakes in Adelaide. There was a Male Masters Single scull however 24 seconds was too much to make up on the eventual winner and had to also settle for a 2nd in a 3rd Division scull event. Wentworth made up the only other interstate club courtesy of Jezz and Bobbie Pappin and Jo McSwain who some of the older members might know. West Lakes is a much improved buoyed course offering great racing conditions with events run over 1000m and 2000m. They are preparing for the Australian National Rowing Championships to be held on 7th March.

Rowing from Mildura to Wentworth
The Club is proposing a row to Wentworth on Saturday 12th February at 7am. The row has been encouraged by some senior members who have traditionally rowed down to Wentworth once a high river starts to recede. At this stage we are proposing to Row the 8 and 1 or 2 quads depending on numbers. There will be 4 Stages of about 15klm each to enable change over to other rowers.

Geoff Talbot, Terry Hill and Paul Hodgson will have support Boats to follow us down the river. We would expect to get to Wentworth by about 11-30am for a BBQ lunch.

Please let me know if you are interested in participating as soon as possible to organise crews.

New Members
We welcome the following new members to the Club
Helena Howe (New Club Secretary)
Rebecca Scown
Katelyn O’Mahoney

New Social Committee
We would also like to welcome the forming of a Social Committee from new and existing members;

Stef Heaysman
Jo Waugh
Leanne Gardner
Karla Fox
Rebecca Scown
Kim Wetti
Sheryl Petitnu

The committee will be involved with planning some club social activity and be looking for further support from the membership base.

Recent Working Bee
A big thanks to the helpers at the recent working bee, Paul Hodgson, Pete Sandell and Dave Carson work tirelessly adding tech-screws in the roof and plugged up more of those leaks in the roof. Marg and Geoff Talbot also provided valuable support in cleaning up the clubrooms.

Recent Transfers
Helen Healy (Transferred to Wentworth)

Corporate Rowing Regatta – Murray Madness

After 4 weeks of intensive training 6 crews fought it out on the water in heats to enable 3 crews to qualify for the final. The rowing has been classified as being the highest level since the Murray Madness Regatta began. This was in part due to the support and dedication to the coaches for each crew but more to the enjoyment and commitment of the participants who really wanted to be involved. Competitors and spectators are still talking about the enjoyable event and businesses are lining up for the next one. It’s hard to tell them they will have to wait 12 months. Thank you to all involved. Photos will be on the website shortly.

Club Training Sessions

I would just like to outline a few training sessions to support Members involvement. The club is promoting Thursday Evening at 6-00pm as a time for members to come down to the club and have a row as a larger group. Tonight we had 2 Fours, a Quad and a Scull on the water. We are looking to get the 8’s out when the opportunity arrives. The sessions also promote Coaching support from Nigel Sullivan, Dave Talbot, Michael Wild, Dave Carson and myself. The following are meant to be guidelines only.

· Tuesday Evenings at 5-30pm Juniors and General Rowing
· Thursday Evenings at 6-00pm General Club Rowing especially Senior members
· Saturday Morning at 7-00am Seniors with a focus in rowing the 8.
· Sunday Morning at 8-00am Learn to Row Program – General Rowing
· Sunday Morning at 9-00am Juniors and General Rowing.

Friday Night Regatta

Following the success of the Corporate Regatta a Friday night rowing event will be held on 17th December commencing at 6-00pm. A BBQ to follow. This is to support the momentum of rowing at present and provide an opportunity for New members to participate in club events with existing members.

Christmas Lunch

Also, just as a reminder of our annual Christmas dinner on Sunday 19th December at 12.30pm.

Financial Members

There have been a few new members join the Mildura Rowing Club over the last few months. I would just like to introduce;

Courtney Biggs
Leanne Gardner
Karla Fox
Hannah Price.

(Are you a member of the Mildura Rowing Club Group on Facebook?)

Transfers out

Guy Wight (to Wentworth Rowing Club)

I would just like to remind members that being a financial member means you are covered by Rowing Victoria’s Insurance. If you are still looking to renew your membership the details are on the club website including Amount and Bank Details.

Disability Rowing Program

Dave Carson (Club President) has mentioned how well the program is going. There has been 4 main participants coming down to the club regularly on a Thursday afternoon from the local Christie Centre. There is real enjoyment on the faces of the participants as they work towards learning new skills and burn off a little energy on the Ergo’s.

Wentworth Rowing Club

Sam Cross has forwarded an email to me today advising of a club event they are holding this Friday 26th November starting at 5-00pm. There will be some rowing activity and a dinner afterwards. If you are free, I would like to encourage getting over to Wentworth for the activity. Further details are below.

NEWSLETTER – Mildura Rowing Club
July 2010

Hi Everyone

The following is an update to some activity at the Rowing Club as present.

Winter Training

Winter training is starting to gather some interest. Similar to the last couple of years, training will be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 5-30pm for those interested. The training will include ergo work, jogging and some boxing so bring your gym gear including sneakers. To enable ease in coordinating training, I would appreciate any new people letting me know you will be attending.

New Ergo

The Club Committee has purchased another new ergo to support members preseason training making 5 machines now available for club use. I would like to thank Andrew Mason for his support to the club by lending his machine for the last 2 or so years. (Johnny Orange has been setting some blistering times to beat.)

Mildura Weir Being removed

You may be aware that there will be some work completed on the Mildura Weir over the next 3 / 4 weeks. The river is expected to be dropped by 4 metres and until the river returns to normal levels, around mid August, it is anticipated that no club rowing boats will be able to be taken out during this period.

Training Timetable

During this time it is expected that there will be more demand to use the ergo’s. Following discussions at recent Committee meetings is has been resolved to structure some training times to suit the increasing number of members to the club and our limited resources. As the new season commences general time slots will be available for members by age categories especially for popular Sunday morning rowing. These times are in effect as of now and are as follows;

Sunday Mornings.

Seniors – 8-00am to 9-00am.

Juniors 9-00am to 10-30am.

As the season gets underway it is expected that these times will blowout however it is designed as something to work towards to encourage more effective use of our facilities. Juniors are given more time to sleep in on a Sunday to help teenagers try to make training times.

Working Bee for Easter Regatta Saturday 20th March
Good Friday Working Bee.

Rowing training at Wentworth this Sunday, 14th March.

Bobbie and Sam from Wentworth Rowing Club have invited members over to Wentworth this Sunday, 14th March, for a training session in conjunction with members from Renmark Rowing Club who will be in town on the weekend. They expect to commence training at around 9-30am and a BBQ lunch will conclude the session. For members interested in coming over to Wenty I would appreciate if you could let me know as it will help organise numbers for training. We will look to leave from the Mildura Rowing Club at 9-00am and head over to Wenty from there. Some members might want to just go over on under their own steam. Members from Wentworth Rowing Club have been great supporters of the activity in Mildura so it would be good to return the favour.

There will still be training sessions from 8-00am at Mildura for those that can’t make the trip over to Wentworth.

Working Bee for Easter Saturday 20th March

The Committee have requested support from members to help with a Working Bee on Saturday 20th March, starting time 9-00am. We will be looking to prepare the clubrooms for our major annual event over Easter. Your support in attending will help may light work and show case our facilities to visiting clubs.

Good Friday Working Bee

Good Friday is a very busy day at the Rowing Club as we need to set up the course and place lines across the river. Could you let me know if you are able to help out on the day. Most of the jobs are completed early in the morning so we can get back home and relax with family members especially those who might have travelled over Easter.

Regards
Rob Ellis

Mini Regatta

Our next mini regatta is being organised for Friday 26th of February. Members are encouraged to be at the Rowing Club at around 6-00pm so events can be worked out. These events create a great social evening with a bit of friendly competition between members and clubs. A BBQ tea will be available to finish off the evening.

Easter Regatta.

Henley on the Murray at Mildura on Saturday and Henley on the Darling at Wentworth on Sunday

The Clubs annual regatta, in Rowing Victoria’s calendar of events, will be held at Mildura and Wentworth over Easter. These events are quickly approaching. We would like to encourage members to start thinking about getting a crew together and start training if they are interested in participating. If you are looking to compete and would like assistance with organising crews or you would like to be nominated to join a coaching squad please advise by return email.

CLUB ZOOT SUITS

If you are in possession of a club zoot suit (6 still missing since last Easter) could these be returned as soon as possible. (to Louise Skinner louise@stockdaleleggomildura.com ).

We are in the process of doing an order for new zoot suits, hats and polo shirts, please advise Lou if you are interested in purchasing any of these items.

We also have a few second hand zoot suits that can be purchased for $30. New zoot suits will be approx $60.

State Championship at Nagambie last weekend.

You may be aware that 8 members competed at the State Championships at Nagambie last Saturday and Sunday. The events were strongly contested and Mildura Rowing Club was well represented in Finals with a few medals being able to make the trip back home. There has been a huge effort made by all MRC competitors at the Championships with early morning trainings sessions leading up to the weekend, travelling over to Nagambie and holding their own against strong opponents. The Committee of the Mildura Rowing Club is proud of members efforts and especially to their coaches putting long training hours. We would also like to acknowledge family members of the participants for their additional support.

Hopefully we will have a full story and photos available on our website shortly to describe a greater record of events.

Members who competed were
Stef Schneider
Ali Scott
Niki Scott
Giulia Iamarino
Alana Ashelford
Brett Davidson
Coached by Guy Wight

Luke Stephens
Eric Stephens
